Purchase options and add-ons

From the New York Times bestselling author of Clear Thinking and Farnam Street founder, Shane Parrish.

The fourth and final installment in the timeless Great Mental Models series.

Time and time again, great thinkers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have credited their success to mental models–representations of how something works that can scale onto other fields.

Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back.

Volume 4 of
The Great Mental Models series delves into the realms of economics and art, presenting more than twenty-four valuable ideas with clear language and style. This book equips you with an understanding of the dynamics shaping our world. It will teach you strategies to leverage these principles and give you a significant edge in the aspects of life you value most.

Some of the mental models covered in this book include:

  • Creative destruction: New innovations must sometimes come at the cost of maintaining the status quo.
  • Representation: The depiction of an idea can be visual, but it can also rely on symbols or other ideas.
  • Genre: Creative expressions tend to be grouped according to socially constructed norms; while a work can play with or bend genre, it can’t exist outside of genre.

The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

Another Interesting But Fairly Long Volume

These books are certainly intriguing and I think the models are worth pursuing. My most major complaint is that the entries could get the main point across more concisely. Ahile the explanatory stories are nice, I thought some of the explanations were unnecessarily repetitive. If you just read the summary at the end of the chapter you can get most of the ideas

    Decent series, somewhat misleading

I thought the first book provided decent content on approaches for reasoning. The following books in the series began to stay from the content to me. The second book had more content for specific modeling such as game theory and constraints but begins to lose practical application with examples where the relevance is stretched. The last book strays the most and has the typical markings of any series running out of ideas with much more of that stray and numerous quotes added which felt like filler from my perspective. Perhaps it's me and there's others that saw all points clearly. I'd suggest the first two books with the caveat that the cover designs are misleading based on the actual content. My suggestion is to screen the table of contents and sample some of the content before buying to confirm any of the books are of interest. I liked a lot of what I read and found myself conflicted overall for the above reasons.

Fourth book in an incredible series that is a must read for those of us that work in an industry or career field that calls for the transfer of information in ways to shape decision makers’ perception. Some useful approaches here.

Like the others, not particularly happy that the first three volumes are red and a large size and this one is blue and a smaller size. I understand all the volumes have been updated but at least keep it the same and maybe bundle the new ones together.

Content likely similar to the other. I enjoy learning about mental models and their applications to life.

Shane and his blog, Farnam Street, have always been a favorite of mine. I purchased this edition print because I’m a huge fan of the first edition. However, I’m disappointed with the quality of the print and paper. I understand that keeping costs low is important, but the pages were printed crookedly, and most of the illustrations from the first edition are missing. (I assume they’re sticking to black and white printing to keep costs down.) Despite these issues, I still love the content, but the crooked pages were a major distraction.
