From the New York Times bestselling author of Clear Thinking and Farnam Street founder, Shane Parrish.

The second book in the timeless Great Mental Models series.

Time and time again, great thinkers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have credited their success to mental models–representations of how something works that can scale onto other fields.

Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back.

Volume 2 of
The Great Mental Models series provides a collection of over twenty important concepts from physics, chemistry, and biology in a clear and accessible style. Not only will you better understand the hidden forces that influence the world around you, you’ll also learn how those forces can work to your advantage.

Some of the mental models covered in this book include:

  • Leverage: When the application of a small force to one end results in a larger force at the other end.
  • Inertia: An object (or organization) at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force.
  • Activation Energy: The minimum amount of energy required to incite a chemical reaction.
  • Ecosystems: A community of organisms that have complex relationships to each other.

The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

— Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress, founder and CEO of Automattic

Great book to help you slow down and learn to think.

Outstanding follow-up from Volume 1. I enjoy reading the chapters 1 at a time over a few days. I really wished I had taken more time to think and read books like this during my college years.

For the most part, the stories that go along with the models work, though it felt many could have been shortened without loss. Overall a stimulating read with both abstract and concrete ideas that can be used. A nice set of mental models to start with

    Lives up to its title!

Presents concepts and ideas that I already knew (e.g., activation energy in chemistry, eco-systems in biology) but with a compelling new framing that helps you to recognize and take advantage of these mental models in other situations.

As a bonus, it has A LOT of interesting examples and fun anecdotes I did NOT know.

I've already applied or adapted several of the models to my work—with great results.

Highly recommended along with the other volumes.

    Interesting but superficial

On the bright side, it’s interesting to be reacquainted with scientific concepts and to see how they are paralleled by other aspects of life, but it feels like it was written on a deadline. The insights are superficial and the scientific concepts are themselves often clearly misunderstood by the authors.

Shane and his blog, Farnam Street, have always been a favorite of mine. I purchased this edition print because I’m a huge fan of the first edition. However, I’m disappointed with the quality of the print and paper. I understand that keeping costs low is important, but the pages were printed crookedly, and most of the illustrations from the first edition are missing. (I assume they’re sticking to black and white printing to keep costs down.) Despite these issues, I still love the content, but the crooked pages were a major distraction.
