Yle is an active operator when it comes to the development of online services. In Finland and on a European scale Yle is a pioneer and sets an example even globally.

Yle has growing responsibilities in the Finnish society as the global media is on the move. Yle has been an initiator for the digital transition in television and an online pioneer in the digital media field.

Yle Areena online service, founded in 2007, is the most popular and most appreciated online medium in Finland, as well as a global pioneer.

Customers and online in focus

  • Developing Yle’s services starts from the customer – the Finnish people.
  • Our services are based on personalization, where anyone can collect their favourite programmes. For example, the Yle Areena online service and the Yle NewsWatch application work based on the preferences of the individual users.
  • Yle Online content is an essential part for Yle’s radio and television programmes.
  • Yle also creates mobile friendly online content such as the children’s online concepts for Pikku Kakkonen (in Finnish) and BUU-klubben (in Swedish) as well as the guides to major sporting events.

Yle leads the way in media technology

Yle has invested in developing the online services and special services for Yle’s Internet TV and radio as well as digital TV. Since 2013 all Yle’s radio and television channels are available for streaming via Yle Areena online service. Providing services for people with hearing or visual impairment and subtitling in different languages are a natural part of the public service.

Yle started HD broadcasts in 2011 with a picture quality approximately five times sharper than a standard-definition picture. In September 2010, Yle made the transition to a tapeless era in the entire programme and broadcasting operations.
