New overnight low -36.8C, snow and wind make roads hazardous

Yet another record low temperature for this winter was recorded early Wednesday morning at Inari in Finnish Lapland. Meanwhile, snow and wind have made driving conditions hazardous nationwide and raised the threat of power outages.

A Finnish Meteorological Institute measuring station at Inari recorded a reading of -36.8 degrees Celsius at 7AM Wednesday morning, a new low for the current winter season.

A reading of more than -36C was also made in Kittilä.

The previous record for this winter, -34.6C was recorded at Muonio on Monday.

Drivers urged to exercise extreme caution

Fresh snow, up to 10cm in some areas, combined with gusty winds has made driving conditions hazardous to extremely hazardous throughout the country. The day's forecast includes the arrival of a new weather front moving in from the west, bringing rain, sleet and snow.

Power utilities and emergency services have been gearing up to deal with possible electricity outages that could affect 1000s of households.
