Studies have found that poorer neighbourhoods are under-represented on Finnish councils. With local elections around the corner, APN talked to Janne Tukiainen, a senior researcher at the VATT Institute for Economic Research, about why local councils are dominated by politicians from better-off neighbourhoods.
"Geography determines who you vote for and we know that turnout among low-income people is lower than in other population groups," he explained.
APN also digests the latest news on Helsinki’s housing market which continues to defy logic as apartment prices in the greater capital area rose by 3.5 percent last year compared to 2019 in spite of the pandemic.
"I think that the price level is out of reach of most middle class people in Helsinki," Yle journalist Petri Kosonen said, explaining that 10,000-12,000-euro square metre prices are becoming increasingly common in the capital these days.
We also dive into the latest Covid developments in Finland and sort out everything from updated travel restrictions to the state of play on kids' group hobbies.
