New Nighttime Low in Lapland

With temperatures plummeting throughout the month, the night of February 17th has set the latest record for frigid nighttime temperatures this winter.

According to unofficial data, the mercury plunged down to -41 degrees Celsius in the town of Naruska, Salla in Finnish Lapland Thursday night.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute confirmed that the temperature in Salla reached -41.8 degrees. Apart from the arctic temperatures recorded in Salla Vuotso, Sodankylä and Väylä in Inari experienced thermometer readings below -40 degrees.

The previous wintry temperature record was set earlier this week in Kuhmo, Kainuu with a reading of -40.5 degrees Celsius. However the all-time lowest winter temperature record was set back in 1999 in Kittiläm where an unprecedented -51.5 degrees was registered.
