Pekkarinen Open to Nuclear Expansion

The need for a sixth nuclear power reactor in Finland has not been discounted, says Minister of Trade and Industry Mauri Pekkarinen. On YLE’s World Forum television program, Pekkarinen spoke of Finland’s need for more competitive energy sources.

He said he would also bolster Finland's self-sufficiency on energy markets, though he is confident about obtaining natural gas and oil from Russia in the future. However, he said determining whether or not more energy from Russia would be available is necessary.

Pekkarinen also said he believes in bilateral cooperation with Russia but that a common energy policy outlook in the European Union is wanted as well. Finland obtains half of its energy and all of its natural gas reserves from Russia. YLE24
