This time the request concerns microscopic cracks that have been found on the outer surface of steel piping.

STUK has called for the suspension of welding work on the pipes. In addition, TVO is required to give a report on the safety implications involved.

Before that, the Olkiluoto 3 project has had problems with the automation systems of the unit that is under construction.

Greenpeace Demands Halt to Construction

The environmental organization Greenpeace is demanding that the construction of the unit be suspended, pending investigation of the shortcomings that have been found during the construction.

“Minister Mauri Pekkarinen must bear his responsibility and stop the construction until all of the shortcomings that threaten Finns have been cleared up”, says Lauri Myllyvirta of Finnish Greenpeace.

The organization says that Areva has not managed to follow the culture of security at any stage in the construction that would be required when building a prototype for the world’s largest nuclear reactor.
