Driving conditions are bad everywhere in the country, except the province of Southwest Finland. Several incidents and rear-end collisions have occurred on the roads, but no serious accidents have been reported by late afternoon.

The police urge motorists to exercise caution.

YLE meteorologist Seija Paasonen recommends that drivers check their windscreen-wiping fluid is topped up and take care on slippery side roads.

Rail traffic and pedestrians also affected

Care should also be taken when travelling on foot. The Turku university hospital reports an exceptional number of patients seeking first aid after falling on ice.

Meanwhile, trains have been running late due to snow in southern and central Finland. Some travellers experienced delays up to an hour long.

Traffic between Helsinki and Turku stalled because of a train accident involving an elk. The train's brake system broke down, but no people were injured.
