Mistranslated recipe suggests using poisonous mushrooms

A crucial translation mistake in the book of Italian recipes Ruokasuosikit Italia, which has been on the market for years, effectively makes the text recommend poisonous false morels for use in a risotto.

Finnish books retailer Suomalainen kirjakauppa has warned consumers of the danger of following the instructions for a mushroom risotto on page 196. The store is also inviting customers to return their copies of the cook book.

False morels are poisonous without extensive prior preparation, which the recipe neglects to mention. The reason for this is apparently a translation error: the recipe in the original English refers mushrooms called morels (or morchella), rather than false morels.

The Jyväskylä-based newspaper Keskisuomalainen was first to report the story.
