Finnish athletics WC team takes shape

The likely line-up for the Finnish team heading to the World Championships in Athletics became clearer on Sunday as the national athletics championships, known as the Kalevan Kisat, wrapped up in Turku.

Newcomer Ari Mannio won the men's javelin event with throws averaging 85.12 metres. The win virtually ensures the 24-year-old Mannio a ticket to the World Athletics Championships beginning in Daegu, South Korea on August 27.

Meanwhile Jukka Keskisalo won his first national championship in the 5,000-metre race with a time of 14:07.54 ahead of Matti Räsänen and Jussi Utriainen.

On the women's side, Merja Korpela won the hammer throw, her fifth straight national title. Her 67.10 metre result was well short of her season's best of 69.30, though.

And as expected, the pole vault championship went to Minna Nikkanen, 23, who has already clinched a berth on the World Championships team.
