Valentine’s Day has both Christian and pagan roots. The event commemorates Saint Valentius from the 4th. Century A.D.

Valentine’s Day arrived in Finland, though, only in the early eighties and was officially marked in the national calendar in 1987.

Shrove Sunday is a little known Christian celebration outside the Nordic region marking the last opportunity to endulge in culinary delights before the start of lent on Ash Wednesday.

Many families mark Shtove Sunday by taking their children out sledging in the snow. Pea soup and shrove buns often find their way on to the table at home.
