Stark Rise in Opioid Deaths

Deaths due to opioid poisoning have skyrocketed in recent years. In 2008, 110 people died after taking pain-reducing opioids. Ten years ago, the number was 37, reports the newspaper Turun Sanomat.

Accidental deaths due to sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medications have risen by as much as 50 percent. Suicides were not included in the number.

Erkki Vuori, a forensics expert from the University of Helsinki, speculates that doctors often fail to use caution when prescribing certain new drugs.

For example, many people wanting to misuse the drugs are able to trick doctors into believing they need the medication.
