High Expectations for Crayfish Season

Test trapping in Finland's second largest inland body of water, Lake Päijänne, indicates that the crayfish population is larger this year than last year, and that the warm weather is fast increasing the size of the tasty crustaceans.

"The population is larger this year also for the reason that more were left in the water last summer because the market for them wasn't as brisk as expected," explains Simo Jalli of the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute.

One average, the catch in Lake Päijänne is three crayfish per trap. Jalli believes that this year that will go up to four per trap.

The crayfish trapping season starts on the 21st of this month.

In recent years, consumer prices for this summer delicacy have been 1-3 euros per crayfish, depending on size.
