Forecast of Smallest Grain Harvest in a Decade

Farmers are anticipating the smallest grain harvest for a decade, according to initial statistics. Only around 3.1 billion kilos of grain are expected to be harvested. In contrast, a record crop of turnip rape is expected.

Agricultural Statistics agency Tike says the reduced area of land used for grain and the lower than average harvest yield will cause the grain crops to be 28% smaller than in 2009.

The turnip rape crop will instead reach a record-breaking high 68% higher than last year’s harvest.

Actual crop quantities are dependent on other factors such as the weather. The long hot, dry spell has caused problems for farmers with drought reported in some southern parts of Finland. Heavy showers during sowing also added to their difficulties.

The Tike crop estimates are based on estimates based on the situation prevailing on July 15th, as collated by the local experts of ProAgria Centres in their own areas. Tike is one of four official statistical agencies that gather data on agricultural production.
