The man faces tough charges including practicing medicine without a license, forgery, fraud and theft.
The fraudster forged medical school certificates in order to gain a foothold at the Karkkila clinic, where he worked between the autumn of 2008 and 2009. He later continued the ruse for a few months at the health centre in Karjaa.
The scam was discovered at Karjaa health centre in conjunction with an investigation involving medical supplies.
According to police, the fraudulent doctor saw around one thousand patients. No evidence of malpractice has, however, been found.
In response to public outrage following several cases of unqualified persons posing as physicians, VALVIRA, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, opened a register of medical professionals this month. The “JulkiTerhikki” service allows the public to check the credentials of doctors and nurses.
