Moviegoers Weary of Loud Films

Many people complain that movie theatre noise levels are too high, reports the Swedish-language daily Hufvudstadsbladet. For example, the sound level of the latest Harry Potter film reaches 80-99 decibels—a level at which experts recommend ear plugs for children.

Musician Stephen Stalter says musicians wear ear plugs at exposure to similar decibel levels.

Moviegoers are continuously asking the City of Helsinki if cinema decibel levels are within legal limits, according to Hufvudstadsbladet. However movie theatres are allowed to be louder than bars where live music is played.

The Finnish Federation of Hard of Hearing says decibel levels at multiplex cinemas don’t pose a threat to hearing. However Kauko Saari, a noise expert at the federation, says massive cinema sound reproduction equipment does amplify people’s perception of sound.
