City Bunnies on the March

Feral rabbits have spread from Helsinki throughout the surrounding province of Uusimaa. The animals, descendents of released pets, have been blamed for costly damage to parks and buildings.

This year wild rabbits, dubbed 'city bunnies', have been seen in Tuusula and Järvenpää. Last week one was spotted in Hyvinkää, 55 km north of the capital.

Though the number of rabbits migrating beyond the capital region is unknown, it is believed to be low so far.

The proliferation of rabbits far from large established warrens is unlikely, says Heidi Kinnunen, a zoologist at the Natural History Museum.

In Espoo, just west of Helsinki, the feral mammals have spread as far as the Ring III highway bordering Kirkkonummi. In Helsinki the biggest population is the city centre, including Kaisaniemi Park.

Even last winter's record-breaking cold temperatures did not have any significant impact on rabbit numbers, with the animals finding food at birdfeeders and in gardens.
