Tuomioja Hits at "False EU Transparency"

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja says a false transparency exists in EU foreign policy. He believes this could endanger the effectiveness of its foreign policy.

Writing in the paper Hufvudstadsbladet, he says the contents of Middle East related documents presented to EU members are usually known within the hour in Tel Aviv, and probably also in Washington and Moscow.

The Foreign Minister says that high level EU officials often give premature media comments on draft decisions.

Tuomioja belives this false type of transparency encourages member states to function outside official decisions This, in turn, undermines the effectiveness of EU foreign policy.
