Thousands Exposed to Radioactive Well Water

Between 30,000 and 50,000 people are exposed to higher-than-recommended levels of radiation from well water each day in Finland. About 15,000 wells have radiation levels that exceed recommended limits, reports the daily Helsingin Sanomat.

According to Laina Salonen, a researcher at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), only 1,500 wells have been installed with radon and uranium removal devices.

While radon and uranium are the major cancer-causing agents, polonium, radium and radioactive lead have also been found in well water.

Pia Vesterbacka, the head of laboratory at STUK, said that about 15 to 20 cancer cases are caused by drinking radioactive water each year.

There are approximately 150,000 wells in Finland. The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority has inspected fewer than 10,000 of the wells for radioactivity. YLE
