Red Cross Clinics in Pakistan Aid 1,000 Patients a Week

Two Finnish Red Cross mobile clinics in southern Pakistan have treated more than 1,000 patients in their first week of operations.

The units are working in the flood-ravaged Sindhi province. They are staffed by 12 Finnish relief workers as well as local doctors and nurses.

Most of the patients suffer from skin infections and diarrhoea; many are also being treated for chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart problems.

The Red Cross is concerned about possible outbreaks of epidemics because of poor hygiene and dirty water.

Men and women are treated in separate sections of the tent hospitals. Female patients are only treated by female medical staff.

Floods that began in Pakistan in late June have left nearly 400-thousand people homeless. In recent weeks disastrous floods have also hit India and Bangladesh.
