Police To Establish Shoeprint Database

Police in Finland intend to set up a shoeprint registry. An article in the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper reports that police want to store shoeprints in a national archive by the end of the year.

The National Bureau of Investigation believes that along with existing fingerprint and DNA databases, the proposed shoeprint archive will assist the authorities in solving property crimes.

However, it is believed that the benefits will be eroded by the ease with which criminals can dispose of shoes after committing wrongdoing.

The newspaper article reports that plans to set up the database have been on the drawing board since the 1990's.
