Ecstasy resurges in Helsinki

Customs officials say smugglers brought 8,700 ecstasy tablets to Finland from Estonia last year.

The pills, the drug of choice for clubbers in the late 1990s, sold for around 6 euros apiece. Deals primarily took place in private homes, say officials.

In 2011, police found 4,700 ecstasy pills hidden in an Estonian passenger car. The discovery led police to uncover two additional ecstasy smuggling runs between Estonia and Finland.

Police have identified five perpetrators, all  between 18 and 23 years of age. Each member of the group had a specific role in the operation. The suspects have no criminal record in Finland.
