Due to heavy snow and subfreezing temperatures, planes took off late from airports in Belgium, Britain, Germany and elsewhere.
On Sunday, British Airways said "delays, cancellations and baggage problems" were "likely to continue". London's main Heathrow Airport warned passengers that "delays and cancellations are possible" and urged them to contact their airlines.
However high winds and bitter cold on Finland's south coast did not significantly delay departures from Finnish airports.
However blowing, drifting snow has hampered traffic in south-western Finland, Eastern Uusimaa, Kymenlaakso and Uusimaa, which includes the Helsinki region.
The Road Administration said on Sunday afternoon that conditions were rapidly deteriorating. Around 3 pm there was a fatal accident in Ruotsinpyhtää on Highway 7 between Porvoo and Kotka, along with others in Vantaa and Lohja.
The Road Administration warns that driving conditions on Monday morning may be extremely slippery.
The State Railways VR reports that the snow and winds have not affected rail traffic. However the company is laying on extra shifts overnight to keep switches clear of snow and ice.
Ship traffic is also reported normal despite warnings of near-gale to gale-force winds and ice accretion on vessels in most maritime areas.
