Greater Psychological Stress at Work

Greater professional demands have led to an increase in stress in the work place. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, insufficient provision has been made to deal with the increase in psychological pressure inherent in contemporary working life.

The Ministry says the higher number of cases of stress is costing the taxpayer more in the form of increased sick leave payments.

The Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Liisa Hyssälä says the problem must be addressed immediately in order to reduce the onset of work incapability. Hyssälä says well being in the working place could be improved by a better management culture taking both the employee's personality into account as well as the content and nature of the job itself.

Hyssälä's comments were made at the opening meeting of the European Occupational Health and Safety Week in Helsinki.
