Estelle crew: no aim to provoke Israeli officials

The crew and passengers of a Finland-flagged ship bound with supplies for Gaza told the Yle morning programme Aamu-TV on Tuesday they will respond peacefully to a possible boarding attempt by Israeli forces.

”We have endeavoured to inform Israeli officials that we are sailing with peaceful intentions,” crew member Wellu Koivisto told the Yle programme.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry says it will not assist the crew of the Estelle if problems arise with Israeli officials. The vessel sails under the Finnish flag although being part of the Swedish Ship to Gaza project. Two Finnish citizens are on board.

Two years ago eight Turkish citizens died on the Mavi Marmara supply ship which tried to land at Gaza. According to Koivisto, the Estelle is smaller and slower than the Mavi Marmara.

”The Estelle is easy to stop and easy to board,” explained Koivisto to Yle.

On board are a crew of eight along with nine passengers.

”Our purpose is not to resist. We are prepared for everything to proceed peacefully and we have no intention to provoke Israeli forces,” Koivisto said.

Israeli troops boarded the Mavi Marmara using excessive force. Those on board were also accused of violent behaviour.
