Among 12 recipients of the award, composer Magnus Lindberg, accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and fashion designer Ritva Falla will also receive medals.

Oksanen has written four novels and won several awards. Daughter of an Estonian mother and Finnish father, Oksanen’s work draws heavily on the legacy of the Soviet occupation of Estonia.

Her third novel, Purge, started life as a play. It follows two women and their struggles against sexual violence through different eras of Estonian history. The book has been translated into 38 languages, and the film version was released in August 2012.

The Pro Finlandia Order of the Lion of Finland award has been granted to outstanding artists since 1945.

The medals will be handed out on Independence Day, this Thursday.
