NSN starts lay-off talks

Nokia Siemens Networks is starting co-determination negotiations with the intention of letting go up to 150 people.

The networking firm says it wants to concentrate resources by reducing staff numbers in administration and sales support, customer service and logistics.

Negotiations affect all four NSN locations in Finland in Tampere, Espoo, Oulu and Salo. Espoo is expected to bear the brunt of the cuts. Research and development, and the company’s Oulu factory, are unaffected.

The Federation of Professional and Management staff (YTN) condemned the company’s plans.

“NSN is again an example of how companies move work away from Finland,” said union chair Pertti Porokari in a statement. “Work leaves the country, beause here staff can be fired a lot easier than, for instance, in Germany.”

The state alcohol retail monopoly is extending Saturday evening hours at about one-third of its stores, with roughly one in 10 opening on Sundays as well.
