The weather system will bring rain into south-western coastal areas during the evening and move on to southern and central regions overnight.

According to Meteorologist Anja Häkkinen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, some areas may see as much as 20mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period.

"On Tuesday morning, breaks in the cloud cover will be seen in the west where it will be dry during the day. The rain will move out of the south and into eastern Finland which may see heavy, continuous downpours. Some showers may still be seen in the south," says Häkkinen.

High winds will accompany Monday night's rains, with gusts on land in southern coastal areas expected to exceed 20 metres per second.

Severe gale warnings have been issued for the Gulf of Finland and the northern Baltic. Waves may be whipped up to heights of over four metres.

The overnight storm in Finland is now, however, forecast to be less severe than the Finnish Meteorological Institute expected earlier in the day.
