Talvivaara CEO breaks silence

Talvivaara CEO Pekka Perä is continuing his foreign tour in search of funding for the ailing mining company. While his whereabouts remain a mystery, Perä promised he would be back in Finland “in a few days’ time.”

Talvivaara CEO Pekka Perä has been conspicuously absent during the past week, during which the depth of the company’s economic plight emerged, and the possibility of bankruptcy was flaunted.

While the fate of Talvivaara hangs in the balance, Perä has reportedly been engaged in a desperate search for funding abroad that might save the company.

On Saturday, Perä finally broke his media silence. Speaking to Yle news, Perä said: “I haven’t disappeared, and I’m not trying to hide. You’ll appreciate that I cannot comment on the situation yet.”

The Talvivaara chief promised to return to Finland next week.

The Ministry of Employment and Economic Affairs remains tight-lipped concerning the mining company and possible state rescue funds, while the Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori is in Saudi-Arabia. Although Vapaavuori is apparently promoting trade and the mining business in the Middle East, the trip has been planned a while back.
