Police have been investigating the case as manslaughter, but the District Court decided to ignore demands that the suspect be kept in custody on suspicion of the three killings. The final charges are not yet known and are expected to be announced next week. It is possible that Laiho could be prosecuted under the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.
Two of the incidents occurred in Helsinki in 2011 and one in Lahti in 2006.
In addition, five other cases are being investigated as grevious bodily harm, but police have refused to reveal details of their content. The incidents also occurred in Helsinki and Lahti.
In all cases, the patients involved or their relatives know of the pre-trial investigation.
