The Olympic ice hockey semi final between Finland and Sweden drew an audience of nearly two million on Friday afternoon. That means more than one in three people in Finland were watching the game, which the Lions’ lost 2-1.

Finns’ Olympic viewing habits have raised some difficult questions in workplaces. Several municipalities have pleaded with employees to watch their favourites on the television, rather than streaming via Yle’s Sochi Areena service, so as to preserve bandwidth and prevent network crashes.

Those calls were heeded on Friday, when the television audience for Finland’s match against Sweden peaked at 1.88 million viewers at around 4pm. The average audience was 1.47 million viewers, even though the puck dropped at 2pm—well within normal office hours.

The watching millions were disappointed, however, when Finland lost 2-1 to the western neighbours. That means they can’t win gold or silver, but the bronze medal match against the USA starts on Saturday at 5pm.
