The Anaheim Ducks winger scored two goals as Finland demolished the US 5-0. After the game he reflected on his final Olympic tournament.
"This has been an amazing experience," said Selänne. "Yesterday’s disappointment (when Finland lost to Sweden in the semi final) was a difficult moment. We decided straight away that bronze in this kind of tournament does not come along every day. Before the game we decided that the coaches didn’t even need to come to our meeting. Wow, what a team."
Selänne first played for Finland’s senior team in 1991, at the start of a career that has gone on longer than anyone expected.
"It’s great that Erkka (Westerlund, Finland coach) believed in me one more time," said Selänne. "It’s been a long career and a fantastic story. It’s wonderful to finish with great memories like these. When I thought about it, I hoped that this would never end."
Selänne was in demand in the media zone.
"I promised that I wouldn’t cry, so I’m holding in my emotions here," said Selänne. "The national team has been a great family and Kummola’s mafia* has been a great place to play and develop. It will stay in my heart forever and you can’t help but be proud of this Olympic family."
Selänne’s time in the Finland team was brought to a close with a message for his fans.
"My main feeling is one of thanks for everything," said Selänne. "This has been an amazing story and the support that I have received from Finns will remain in my heart forever."
