The Meteorological Institute warns of heavy rains in eastern parts of the country. Between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, up to 60 millimetres of rain may fall in places.
The heaviest downpours are forecast in south and north Karelia, as well as south and north Savo, where 40-60 millimetres of rain can be expected between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
This amount of water in one day is unusual. It is even possible that more than 70 millimetres of rain will fall within 48 hours.
The Meteorological Institute issues warnings of heavy rains when there’s a chance of topping 50 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.
Heavy flooding unlikely
The Institute and the flood centre at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) say that flooding is unlikely in eastern parts of the country, despite the rains. The water level in the region’s lakes is lower than usual, so they can still accommodate plenty of water.
The Meteorological Institute says the rains will fall at quite an even pace over large areas.
The rains may impact agriculture, as fields get waterlogged, and streams form.
Some residential areas may also experience flooding, especially if thunder storms bring additional rains.
Low pressure brings rains
In the south, over 25 millimetres of rain may fall over the same time, while the west coast will be mostly sunny.
A strong low pressure area moving from southern Finland to the east is responsible for the heavy eastern rains, according to the Meteorological Institute.
The low pressure also brings blustery winds to the east, Kainuu and eastern parts of Lapland.
