Government has agreed to pare down municipal responsibilities in an effort to save about one billion euros. So far local government authorities have been able to identify the means to save about half that amount.

Speaking at a meeting National Coalition Party MPs Monday, Prime Minister Stubb said that ministerial budget talks must first determine how to reduce new local government duties. Other municipal savings targets would have to be found at the latest during the budget discussions due at the end of August, Stubb added.

Tweets from the event also indicated that the government would not entertain any cuts to education, research and innovation.

Stubb said that the next government’s programme of action should be short and focused and should undergo annual reviews and revisions.
