Shopping hubs draw annual sales around 6 billion

Last year, the combined sales of Finnish shopping centres rose to just over 5.9 billion euros, with the number of visits clocking in at 366 million. Based on these figures, visitors fork out an average of 16 euros each time they set foot in a mall, according to the Finnish Council of Shopping Centers’ annual report.

Last year Finland’s 93 shopping centres made sales just shy of the 6 billion euro mark. The number of visitors was 366 million, meaning that in simple terms the average spend per visitor was around 16 euros.

The total number of visitors is on the up compared to the previous year’s figures, yet the customer to sale ratio remained about the same.

Finnish Council of Shopping Centers statistics reveal that there was quite a large variation in average spend across different centres. For example, at Helsinki City and Kamppi Shopping Centers a single customer spent on average only 6.5 euros per visit.

The variation is explained by the nature of such locations as thoroughfares – Kamppi is also a bus and metro station and the city centre is a natural transit point for many.

Vantaa, Raisio and Veturi visitors stock up more than most

Of Finland’s 20 largest shopping centres, the greatest average spend was claimed by the Jumbo centre in Vantaa, the Veturi Center in Kouvola and Raisio’s Mylly shopping centre. In these locations the average amount to part from a visitor’s wallet was a touch below 40 euros.

Although there are already almost a hundred shopping centres in Finland, plenty more are planned for construction or slated for enlargement. For example, in Lappeenranta the Iso-Kristiinankatu shopping centre is being extended and Oulu will cut the ribbon on its new Valkea shopping mall in about a year.

Helsinki is also expecting the birth of some new consumer hubs – new malls will spring up in at least Pasila and Kalasatama. Meanwhile, Seinäjoki and Jyväskylä also have plans to build new centralised shopping locations.

The state alcohol retail monopoly is extending Saturday evening hours at about one-third of its stores, with roughly one in 10 opening on Sundays as well.
