Rain moving in from the west

The weather for rest of this week is likely to remain unsettled. More precipitation than normal for the time of year is delaying the growing season for farmers especially in southern parts of the country.

Tuesday has brought cloudy skies to many parts of the country, although the sun may peek through from time to time in southern and central Finland. Western and northern areas can expect widespread local showers, while rain clouds are forecast to move into southern and eastern parts of the country, as well as Kainuu and both northern and eastern Lapland during the afternoon hours.

A new low pressure area will bring even heavier rainfall into the country from the south on Wednesday. On Thursday, rain is in the forecast for northern regions.

There is still quite a lot of snow cover in Lapland, which combined with heavy rains could lead to spring flooding in some areas.

Planting behind schedule

Spring planting by farmers in southern parts of the country is running about ten days behind normal because of cold, wet conditions.

The ProAgria advisory service reports that only 5%-20% of spring grain planting has been finished. Farmers have had the best luck with the weather in the southwest where about a third of fields have been planted.

Meanwhile fruit and berry plants are just beginning to bloom in the south.
