Finland celebrates Restaurant Day in chilly May

Saturday May 16 was Restaurant Day in Finland. Different from traditional pop-up restaurants founded by restaurateurs, Restaurant Day invites anyone at all to put up their own restaurant, café and bar for one day only with no strings attached. The Finnish invention has become a global phenomenon, with last counts showing 130 countries participating.

Held four times a year, Restaurant Day allows anyone at all to set up their own food stall without having to worry about sale permits, taxes or other vending regulations. Founded by Helsinki residents Timo Santala, Olli Sirén and Antti Tuomola in 2011, the movement was originally intended to promote and celebrate food culture.

Since that time, these amateur food extravaganzas have spread to dozens of countries creating tens of thousands of pop-up restaurants.

Restaurant Day is now the world’s biggest quarterly food festival, celebrated in hundreds of cities around the world.
