The Oulu police say they have a clearer picture of the events of Friday night, when a youth centre worker in nearby Muhos was murdered by two of the shelter's teenage residents.

"The accused have explained to us how the situation escalated, but we cannot comment further on the motives or chain of events at this time," detective Petri Savela says.

In addition to murder, the boys are suspected of aggravated robbery and reckless endangerment.

Two persons are known to have fled the scene in Muhos using the youth shelter's car. The runaways were apprehended north of the city of Kuopio.

Police refuse to say whether the perpetrators have Finnish backgrounds, but say that interrogations are going well.

"They have been compliant with us," Savela says. "Whether or not they show remorse is hard to say at this juncture."

The suspects reportedly have some criminal background, but nothing as serious as the charges they will soon face in court. Police say technical investigations and interrogations may take weeks yet. Two other boys present at the time of the murder are not suspected of any crimes.
