Five former security guards have been remanded into custody on suspicion of various degrees of assault and abuse committed while on duty along the main railway line through the Helsinki region.

Three of them were remanded at Eastern Uusimaa District Court on Wednesday, and two more on Thursday.

Last weekend, the police detained six security guards in connection with the case. According to the police, more suspects may be identified.

The guards were employed by Avarn Security, which is responsible for security on trains and at stations in the capital area. The firm has since dismissed the six guards.

Yle reported on Wednesday that two men, born in 1999 and 2000, are suspected of assault and aggravated assault, while another man, born in 2002, is suspected of assault.

"The preliminary investigation of this extensive crime is only in the initial stages, so at this stage the police have nothing else to report. As these cases arouse great interest in society as well as in the media, we will provide more information on the matter when it is possible to do so without jeopardising the investigation," Detective Inspector Timo Luoto said in a police statement on Thursday.

The police are asking members of the public who feel that they may have been mistreated or subjected to abuse by security guards to report their experiences.

"From the point of view of the investigation, it is very important that we reach all possible victims," said Luoto.

Each security guard must have an operating license issued by police. Such a licence can be revoked or suspended if a guard no longer meets the requirements laid down in the law, which include a clean criminal record.
