Poll: NCP-SDP coalition most popular post-election option

The survey found that the most popular government option following next spring's parliamentary elections would be a coalition including the Social Democrats and the conservative NCP.

A government formed around cooperation between the conservative National Coalition Party and the Social Democratic Party would be the most popular option following next spring's parliamentary elections, according to a survey published by the farmer's union paper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus on Monday.

About 27 percent of the respondents supported that combination as their first choice.

The alternatives presented to the voters polled were various combinations of the three parties currently enjoying the highest backing in polls, the NCP, SDP, and the Finns Party, along with the support of smaller, unspecified "other parties".

Among combinations of major parties, the second most popular choice of voters in the poll, at 19 percent, was a cabinet built around cooperation between the NCP and the Finns Party. Only seven percent supported the idea of a government base formed by the SDP and Finns Party.

The poll, carried out just before Christmas, also asked what kind of policy the respondents would primarily like from the next Finnish government. It found that 28 percent are in favour of more right-leaning policies from any post-election government.

Nearly one fifth (19 percent) stated a preference for leftist policies, and just over 11 percent would like a government implementing centrist policies.

The survey was carried out by Kantar TNS Agri, with responses from 1,100 participants. The margin of error was three percentage points in either direction.
