Western Uusimaa District Court has remanded Aleksanteri Kivimäki into custody over crimes related to the hacking of patient records from the Vastaamo psychotherapy centre.

Kivimäki arrived at the court from Vantaa prison, escorted by two police officers and smiling for the cameras. The proceedings were sealed at the request of investigating officer Marko Leponen for operational reasons, and Kivimäki's lawyers did not object.

Kivimäki is suspected of aggravated extortion, aggravated data breaches and aggravated distribution of information infringing privacy, among other offences.

The deadline for prosecutors to bring formal charges is 18 October.

25-year-old Kivimäki was extradited to Finland from France last Friday. His lawyer, Peter Jaari, said that he denies all charges against him.

The suspect was previously known as Julius Kivimäki. Yle published his name at this stage in the investigation because of the exceptional significance of the Vastaamo hacking and extortion.

Around 30,000 victims were sent demands for payment, with threats that details of their treatment and discussions with psychotherapists would be made public if they did not pay up.
