Progress made in averting rail strikes

A planned strike by most railway workers has been cancelled, but engine drivers are still in talks with employer representatives.

The Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) and the service sector employers' group Palta on Thursday accepted the national mediator's settlement proposal in the rail sector labour dispute.

JHL, which represents groups of railway workers, including conductors, had threatened to launch a five-day strike from Monday, 6 March until 10 March.

That strike has now been cancelled.

However, a dispute between the union representing railway engine drivers (RAU) and Palta had not yet reached an agreement as of Thursday morning, so the union's threat of a strike to press demands, beginning Monday, is still in force.

It is uncertain what overall impact of a strike by RAU members would have on rail services.

National rail firm VR told the STT news agency on Thursday morning that it is still possible that rail traffic will come to a complete halt next week.
