Police in Helsinki suspect a 13-year-old stabbed another student during a home economics class at a school in the district of Vesala on Wednesday morning.

A police patrol called to the scene found both the suspect and the victim, who had a stab wound to the side and was taken to the hospital by paramedics.

The suspect was detained by police at the scene.

Vesala Comprehensive School principal Niina Halonen-Malliarakis told Yle that the school is now safe following the incident, adding that a crisis response team has been made available to students and staff.

"Crisis assistance is provided from our own resources, on behalf of the police and the Helsinki Crisis Group," she said, adding that the rest of the school day will continue as normal.

Police have launched an investigation into the events leading up to the suspected stabbing as well as the possible motivations behind it.

Detective Inspector Marko Forss confirmed in a police press release that the investigation is ongoing, and officers are treating the incident as a suspected case of attempted manslaughter.

As the preliminary probe is still in its early stages, Forss said the police were unable to divulge any further information at this stage.
