Olivia and Leo most popular Finnish names

Finland's naming committee has to approve any new names that parents want to bestow.

In 2022 the most popular Finnish-language names given to children in Finland were Olivia and Leo. The most popular Swedish-language names were Saga and Oliver, and the most popular names from other languages were Sofia and Adam.

Finland has allowed parents to register their children's names digitally since December, and some 88 percent of names since then have been notified online.

This speeds up the process of registering names at the Digital and Population Services Data Agency.

Names that are new to Finland must be evaluated and approved by the naming board, however, and that adds to the processing time.

Traditionally in Finland, children's names are not revealed until the baby is christened.

The largest groups of immigrants this year are from Ukraine, the Philippines and India, while in 2019 the list was topped by Russians, Estonians and Iraqis.
