Coalition partner SPP calls parliamentary group meeting to discuss Purra situation

The Swedish People Party's leader has previously stated that if the government is to function properly, it should be clear that there is no place for racism within it.

The parliamentary group of coalition government member the Swedish People's Party (SPP) is set to meet on Friday evening to discuss the scandal surrounding finance minister Riikka Purra (Finns), the SPP's chair Anna-Maja Henriksson told Svenska Yle.

Purra apologised earlier this week for having written a number of racist and violent comments on a blog in 2008.

Despite the apology, calls are increasing among opposition parties for the Finns Party minister to face a confidence vote.

Henriksson has previously stated that if Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's (NCP) coalition government is to function properly this autumn, it should be shown that there is no place for racism in it.

"The parliamentary group needs to discuss how we see the situation," Henriksson told Svenska Yle on Friday, characterising the situation as very difficult.

She said that she was not pleased with a tweet the Finns Party leader posted on Thursday morning, which said that the Finns Party planned to continue on its mandated path.

"You can say that finance minister Purra's latest tweet did not put me in a better mood. A couple of days ago, she distanced herself from her previous writings and apologised, and that was absolutely necessary. But what she expresses on social media needs to be in harmony with that," Henriksson said.

Henriksson currently serves as education minister.

Opposition parties have called for Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho (Finns) to interrupt MPs' summer break in order for MPs to discuss how Orpo's government has handled recent events.

Late last month, another Finns Party member, former economic minister Vilhelm Junnila, announced that he was resigning amid a scandal concerning his own comments and links to the far-right.

Before his eventual resignation, Junnila survived a confidence vote called by the opposition. Votes on the measure fell 95-86 with three abstentions and 15 absences.

Seven SPP MPs voted against Junnila, with the other three abstaining.
