Banks have said the number of scams coming to their attention this year has grown, according to Finance Finland, the lobbying group for the finance industry.

The organisation says that customers lost some 19.8 million euros in the first six months of the year. One year earlier the equivalent figure was 10.8 million euros.

In addition, banks say they prevented scams that would have amounted to some 15.9 million euros.

Finance Finland says there is no clear reason for the increase in scams, but there were several large-scale scams in operation at the start of the year.
