Olkiluoto nuclear reactor repairs delayed

Teollisuuden Voima had stated that the repairs might take until around midday on Tuesday, but that was found to be an under-estimate.

The Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor will not be fixed until at least 6pm on Tuesday, according to its operator, delaying relief for those faced with high electricity spot prices.

Teollisuuden Voima (TVO), which operates the plant, said that repairs, inspection and subsequent testing will take longer than originally expected.

That means the plant will not be back online until around 6pm on Tuesday. The firm had earlier said that it would be fixed by midday on Tuesday.

The reactor had shut down automatically when a fault in the cooling system was detected on Sunday evening.

The disruption has no implications for nuclear safety, according to TVO. Electricity spot prices have however shot up after the shutdown, with the cost of a kilowatt hour of electricity expected to surpass 95 cents on Tuesday afternoon.
