The weekend's bone-chillingly cold temperatures continued across much of Finland on Monday, with wintry weather in the forecast for the rest of this week.

"Winter is here to stay in all of Finland," says Yle meteorologist Elias Paakkanen.

The coldest region on Monday was eastern Lapland, where the daytime forecast was for -30C degrees.

In southern and central parts of the country, the temperature is hovering around -15C but a freezing wind added considerable bite to the cold conditions.

"The wind makes the air temperature feel about seven degrees colder. Even in the south, it can easily feel like minus 20 degrees," says Paakkanen.

A change on Tuesday

A weather front moving in from the southeast overnight is forecast to bring heavy snowfall, between 3 and 13 centimetres of the white stuff throughout the country, except in Lapland.

Temperatures will rise to around -5C nationwide, but at the same time winds will intensify, especially in the north, where the forecast is for gusts of up to 18 metres per second.

On Wednesday, the snow clouds will move on southern and central Lapland.

Bad driving road conditions are expected on Tuesday for the entire country, with the exception of Lapland, which has a hazardous driving conditions warning in place for Wednesday.
