Finland's President Sauli Niinistö held a video call with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping on Wednesday morning, during which the two leaders discussed damage to the Balticconnector pipeline that occurred in October last year.

A Finnish investigation into the incident led to the recovery of a large anchor near where the gas pipeline was damaged in the Gulf of Finland. The anchor was subsequently traced to a vessel called the NewNew Polar Bear, a Hong Kong-flagged ship owned by a Chinese firm.

A press release from the Finnish president's office noted the "constructive dialogue between the countries" concerning the incident.

China had previously offered its "full cooperation" in the investigation.

The release also noted that the two leaders discussed bilateral relations between China and Finland, describing them as "stable and long-standing". The topic of the global geopolitical situation and the need to combat climate change were also discussed.

"President Niinistö raised the issue of the war in Ukraine and its wider consequences. Niinistö stressed the role of China in achieving a just and lasting peace," the statement said, adding that the two leaders agreed on the importance of "genuine, constructive and cross-regional dialogue" as a means of solving global problems.
